tree bebe 🎄
on being unpractical
I love being practical.
Yet moving around seven homes in thirteen years, I am acutely aware of how I have to counter an increasing propensity to be overly practical.
For example...
Decorations are the last thing on my mind.
It costs money.
It doesn’t particularly do anything.
It takes up precious storage space.
It takes up precious real estate.
It’s not multi-purpose.
It’s not practical.
But maybe that is the point.
Maybe the marking of seasons,
the celebratory stuff that make visceral the shifts in the calendar,
especially a turning in the liturgical cycle from ordinary time to advent,
is cause for more unpractical things.
Maybe the function in ‘form & function’ is meant to spark something intangible in my heart toward greater delight.
Maybe I’m getting old enough to be young again.
Maybe I want to model to my smol nephews that so much in life is worth celebrating and anticipating God to surprise us with His extravagance.
Mebbe I just want my home to smell like a freshly chopped tiny christmas tree hehe.

be well,
reb
