socks
everyday essentials
Dear friends,
I was inspired lately by my nephew putting on his socks.
Firstly, I didn’t realize that the three-year-old could do so by himself, and I was ridiculously proud of him.
Secondly, I had never thought about the level of dexterity required for a little brain to tell little hands and little feet to apply such a feat, until I watched Tedders take two whole minutes just to put on one sock. I was fascinated. He is developing skills so essential to everyday independence, yet so ordinary that I don’t think twice about it decades later.
Thirdly, you can’t just forget how to put on socks, yah? All these muscle-memory things that are ingrained into our bones. It’s not like we can unlearn them. We have it for life. It’s just…there. We don’t need to even think about them, we just do them. It makes me think about following Jesus. As the years go on, there are some things we just do after learning them. Sing. Rejoice. Obey. Repent. Depend. Abide. Forgive. Ask. Seek. Knock. These are the daily mutmut of a Christian.
Fourthly, yet socks need to be changed and washed every day. Sometimes we lose one. Sometimes one gets a hole. Eventually, it’s just time for brand new pairs. All these marks of a Christian are constantly getting revamped and refreshed as we embrace new seasons of depth and experiences with the Lord. I find comfort in this idea that the faith staples are stable, yet require constant renewal, and at times, complete transformation.
I’ll stop at these four points before my thoughts, as usual, devolve into anything heresy-adjacent. Have a good week, friends.
love,
reb
